4x8 raised bed plan guide

A 4x8 raised bed, 96 by 48 inches outside, is one of the most common larger raised bed sizes, doubling the growing area of a 4x4 bed on the same footprint shape scaled up. Its size also changes a few things about the build that a smaller bed does not need to account for.

Why it needs a center brace

The long 8 foot side boards on a 4x8 bed span a much greater distance unsupported than the boards on a 4x2 or 4x4 bed do. Once filled with soil, the outward pressure over that longer span can bow an unsupported long wall outward over time. A center brace, a board running across the middle of the bed connecting the two long walls, or a mid-span post on each long side, resists that bow and is a standard part of any 4x8 design; the free configurator automatically adds a brace to its cut list once a bed's length or width reaches 84 inches.

Reach and access

At 48 inches wide, a 4x8 bed can only be reached from both long sides, not worked entirely from one side, since 48 inches is twice the roughly 24 inch comfortable single-side reach covered in the size guide. Plan for path access on both long sides of the bed, not just one, when siting it.

Soil volume

At the standard 11 inch depth, a 4x8 bed's interior floor comes to about 93 by 45 inches once the board thickness is subtracted from the outside dimensions, giving roughly 26.6 cubic feet, close to a full cubic yard. One 4x8 bed versus two 4x4 beds

The same roughly 32 square feet of growing area can come from one 4x8 bed or two separate 4x4 beds. A single 4x8 bed uses less lumber overall, since it does not duplicate a full set of four corner posts and end boards the way two smaller beds do, but it needs the added center brace and is harder to move or reconfigure later since it is one large structure rather than two independent ones. Two 4x4 beds cost slightly more in material but give more flexibility in layout and make it easier to rotate or separate crops.

Board count for the walls

Because the 96 inch long boards match a standard 8 foot board length exactly, the long walls of a 4x8 bed use full boards with no offcut waste on that dimension, one of the more materially efficient standard sizes to build. The end boards and brace still generate some offcut, which the cut list accounts for.
