What the build pack contains
The Raised Bed Build Pack is a single 28 page PDF holding six complete plans. Its cut lists use the same board sizes as the free configurator, so a figure checked on paper in the timber yard matches the figure on screen.
| Stock board | Length | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| 8 feet | 96 inches | The 4 foot and 4 by 8 beds, cut with almost no waste |
| 10 feet | 120 inches | Long sides of a 10 foot run, or two 5 foot pieces |
| 12 feet | 144 inches | The L shaped bed and any run over 10 feet |
Opening and printing
The file is a standard PDF and opens with no extra software, in a browser on a computer or in the built in Files app on a phone. Print the cut list and the dimensioned view on letter size at full scale rather than fit to page, so the dimensions stay legible in a workshop.
Downloading again
The link is tied to the order and does not expire on its own, so the file can be pulled down onto a second device. If the confirmation email cannot be found, write from the address used at checkout via the contact page and it will be reissued.
What you may do with the plans
Print them as often as you like and build from them as often as you like, including beds you build to sell. Passing on, publishing or reselling the PDF itself is not permitted.
Step by step file check after download
Save the PDF before you open it for workshop use. A browser preview is useful for a quick look, but a saved copy is safer when you later work away from a connection, rename the file, or print selected pages.
- On a computer, create a folder named for the project, for example raised bed spring build, then save the PDF there before printing.
- On a phone, use the share or save control and place the file in the built in file storage app, not only in the email app preview.
- Open the saved file once, scroll to the last page, and check that page turning is smooth before going to the timber yard.
- Make one backup copy in cloud storage or on a second device. This takes about 1 minute and avoids a delay if the shop computer or phone has no signal.
- Rename only your local copy. Keep a simple name with letters, numbers, and spaces, because some older printers handle special characters badly.
For a clean paper set, print only the pages needed for the bed size you are building first. Keep the full PDF on the device, and carry the printed cut list and dimension view as the working copy. A full build check usually takes 10 to 15 minutes at a desk before cutting begins.
Equipment, print settings, and measurements to verify
Use a normal letter size printer if available. Set scale to 100 percent or actual size. Do not use a shrink to printable area setting unless the printer cannot place marks near the paper edge. If a page prints slightly smaller, the written dimensions still control the build, but small text and reference lines may be harder to read outdoors.
| Item to check | Practical target | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Paper size | Letter size, 8.5 by 11 inches | This keeps the cut list and dimension view readable on a bench. |
| Print scale | 100 percent or actual size | This avoids compressed text and keeps layout spacing predictable. |
| Screen size for review | At least a phone in landscape mode, better on a tablet or laptop | Cut tables are easier to follow when full rows are visible. |
| Shop copy protection | Clear sleeve, clipboard, or folded packet | Paper lasts longer near damp soil, sawdust, and rain. |
| Time for verification | 10 to 15 minutes before buying lumber | This catches bed size, board length, and quantity errors before loading material. |
Bring a tape measure that reads inches clearly, a pencil, and a phone with the saved PDF. If you mark boards at the store, use the printed list only for counting and planning. Do final cut marks on a stable work surface, because a mark placed while a board is hanging off a cart can be off by 1 quarter inch or more.
Common file and print mistakes, with recovery steps
If the file opens in the email preview but cannot be found later, it was probably never saved outside the mail app. Open the message again, use the download or share control, and save the PDF to a named folder. Then close the email app and reopen the file from storage to confirm the copy is independent.
If a printer cuts off part of the page, print one test page with the setting changed from actual size to fit to printable area. Use this only for legibility. For building, read the written dimensions, not the physical size of a line on paper.
If the shop copy becomes wet, stop using it for measurements if ink has run into the numbers. Reprint the needed pages. A blurred 6 can look like an 8 in poor light, and a single wrong cut can waste a long board.
If two copies show different handwritten notes, treat the clean PDF as the master and copy the correct notes onto one current print set. Cross out obsolete pages with a large X before they reach the work area. This simple habit prevents a helper from building from an old mark while you use the corrected one.
- Wrong file opened: Check the file name and page count before printing, especially if several garden PDFs are stored in the same folder.
- Only half the table prints: Change page orientation only if the printer dialog rotated the page incorrectly, then print one test page before printing the rest.
- Phone cannot show the file at the yard: Turn off mobile data briefly and open the saved PDF. If it opens with no connection, it is stored locally.
- Measurements are hard to read: Print the specific page again in normal quality rather than draft quality. Draft mode can make small fractions faint.
Special cases for shared devices, phones, and workshop use
When using a shared family computer, place the PDF in a project folder rather than the general downloads folder. Downloads folders often sort by date, and files can be moved or deleted during routine cleanup. A named folder also keeps photos, receipts, and marked up notes together.
When printing at a copy shop, carry the file on a phone and, if possible, on a USB drive. Ask for black and white letter size printing at actual size. There is no need to request poster scaling or plan enlargement for ordinary workshop reading.
When a helper needs the information on site, print a second set rather than passing the only marked copy back and forth. One set can stay at the saw, and one set can stay at assembly. For questions about access and account handling, use the site FAQ as the reference point before starting a new request.
For outdoor assembly, tape the current cut list inside a garage door, to a board off the ground, or to the back of a clipboard. Keep it above soil level. A raised bed build often involves damp gloves, irrigation parts, and loose compost, so a paper set left on the ground usually fails before the job is done.
